Geneva High School student creates petition to keep hybrid learning schedule

GENEVA – The Geneva School District announced Tuesday that all students in the hybrid model will return to the classrooms five days a week beginning April 5, but not everyone is happy about that decision.

A Geneva High School student created a petition on change.org that urges the district to continue the alternating-day hybrid learning schedule, instead of attending school five days a week. The name of the student was not listed on the petition.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had more than 500 signatures.

The petition states the decision to return to five days in-person was not made with any input from the students, and returning five days will “force students to completely rearrange their schedules, ultimately causing a great deal of stress.”

“Students will have to change the sleep schedules they have had for nearly seven months, jobs, sports, clubs, or any other activities students participate in on their off-site days will have to be quit or drastically adjusted to accommodate for lack of time and schoolwork, parking at GHS will have to be completely changed, mental health will NOT benefit from the model by any means and grades will drop,” the petition states.

The petition also states that changing the schedule “only months before school is over is not right” and is “beyond unjust” for the students.

“And most importantly, this is extremely unsafe. Health should be a top priority in schools and this horrendous plan is jeopardizing that. Do better GHS,” the petition concluded.

This is a developing story, and will be updated when more information and comments become available.
