My dining companion and I decided to start with a couple of appetizers. She loves onion rings, so she ordered them. They were listed on the menu as beer-battered, and they looked and tasted delicious. I went with the house specialty, armadillo eggs. There were only four on the plate, but that was more than enough. These hearty appetizers were a blend of pepper jack, chihuahua and cheddar cheeses, poblano peppers, chorizo and fresh cilantro fried in a corn tortilla breading and served with fresh house-made salsa and chipotle ranch. Definitely different and quite filling. These could be a meal in themselves.

For our main courses, my companion ordered the chicken quesadilla, which was half the size of the plate and came with sour cream, salsa and guacamole on the side so you could dress it up however you like. I ordered the brisket burger, which was a 1/3-pound patty topped with sliced beef brisket, white cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce and grilled onions. Meat as a condiment? Count me in. Also, both came with a choice of side, and we both picked fries. They were seasoned and tasted like curly fries, but they were cut as normal fries.

After we finished the main course, we opted for dessert. We ordered "The Horns": a salted caramel-crusted brownie covered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce, with two inverted drumstick ice cream cones to look like horns. It not only looked awesome, but it tasted very good. The pretzel crust under the brownie was a nice touch. It's easy to see why so many people pack into the Greenhorn. The inside is decorated well, and there also is a good-sized patio for those who like to dine outside.
