Crystal Lake police arrest four during Thanksgiving crackdown

The Crystal Lake Police Department arrested one driver for driving drunk and two for possession of marijuana as part of stepped-up enforcement tied to the Thanksgiving holiday, the department said Wednesday.

Crystal Lake police joined other departments across the state in participating in a Illinois Department of Transportation safety campaign aimed at reducing drunk driving and seat belt violations.

The department used federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation to run extra patrols, which resulted in 60 additional vehicles stopped, 64 more traffic citations issued and four criminal charges, according to a news release.

The citations included 37 for speeding, eight for unlawful cellphone use, one for graduated driver’s license violation, five for for occupant protection and 13 for other moving violations, according to the release.

The charges included one for drunk driving, one for driving while license suspended and two for marijuana possession, according to the release.

The enforcement campaign took place from Nov. 20 to 30, according to the release. During the mobilization, extra emphasis was placed on enforcement during late-night hours, when statistics show the most unbuckled and impaired driving fatalities occur.
