LETTER: Kilbride's qualities include honesty, integrity, competence, and a willingness to hear all sides

To the Editor:

As retired Illinois State Judges, the four of us listed below have a unique perspective on what qualities a good judge needs. Many combined decades of experience have enabled us to live the law and its application to the fine citizens of Illinois.

This November, Supreme Court Justice Tom Kilbride is up for retention. We endorse his retention. This endorsement is grounded in our knowledge of Justice Kilbride as a man and a Jurist. We personally have known and worked with Tom over our respective careers. It has been a privilege. Justice Kilbride has faithfully and competently applied his time and knowledge to his responsibilities.

One of the most impressive facts about Thomas is that he was born with no silver spoon in his mouth. He was and remains a man tethered to the average Illinois citizen. His legal career involved all people. In fact, his origins in helping the indigent through his legal aid work makes him special indeed as a Justice.

So what are those qualities that are needed in a good judge? Simply put: honesty, integrity, competence, a willingness to hear all sides and justice seasoned with mercy. That is Tom in a nutshell. We are indeed honored to request of you that you vote for his retention.
