LETTER: Someone please help me understand

To the Editor:

When I walk into a store and I am not wearing a mask, there is an employee that tells me that masks are recommended, but yet the same store sells tobacco and alcohol products that have clear warnings from the surgeon general stating that this product causes lung and throat cancer, emphysema, birth defects, and the list goes on.

We all know the adverse effects that tobacco and alcohol have on our bodies, and the hardships that out of control alcohol use can cause, we really don't even need the surgeon general to tell us. The effects are obvious, but yet these purchases can still be made.

To be clear, I am not against legal tobacco and alcohol use. But if you are selling those items, do not preach to me about masks being recommended in your store. Yes, I understand that our governor is making it hard on you, but when the day comes that he outlaws the sale of tobacco and alcohol and may I add abortions, and cars that also cause death, that might be the day that I will voluntarily wear a mask to fend off a virus that I am not particularly scared of.

By all means, if you feel that your mask is effective, then wear it. It doesn't bother me if you do. I want you to feel happy. I can assure you that I will not look down on you nor will I scold you because you are wearing a mask.

It would be nice to assume that I could expect the same treatment from you.
