PREP ROUNDUP: West Carroll's Nevills second at regional

West Carroll senior Briar Nevills took second place at the Class 1A Alleman Regional on Saturday, crossing the line in 15:26, just four seconds shy of the mark by Sherrard's Jacob Belha.

The Thunder had 323 points as a team to claim 13th. Sherrard won the team championship with 46.

Erie-Prophetstown was the top area team, taking fourth with 118 points. Jacob Gibson led the Panthers with a 16th-place finish in 17:07. Andrew Bomleny took 19th.

Bureau Valley scored 298 points to claim 10th. Elijah House had the best time for the Storm with a 17:16 to claim 21st.

Oregon ninth on home course: The Hawks scored 187 to finish ninth at the Class 1A Oregon Regional.

Rockford Christian won with 22 points with four of the top five runners, including individual champion D'Artagnon Beaver. East Dubuque scored 81 to take second.

Oregon's top finisher, Ryan Hussung, took 29th with a time of 19:19.5.

Polo's Carson Jones was the top area finisher with a time of 18:41.2 to claim 16th. Teammate Wyatt Queckboerner was not far behind, taking 18th with a time of 18:49.4.

Eastland's top runner was Hunter Groezinger, whose 20:38.5 was good for 54th.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Hawks take third: Oregon scored 109 points to claim third in the regional on the home course. Winnebago scored 21 points to win with Rockford Christian scoring 65 to claim second.

Faith Marquardt finished in 21:55 to finish 12th, the top time for Oregon. Leah Watters was 15th with a time of 22:13. Katlyn Ramirez was 18th with a time of 22:23.

Eastland was in fourth with 131 points. Delaney Wilhelms was the top Cougar, claiming 19th place in 22:25, finishing less than a second in front of teammate Mara Schmieder.

Polo's Bekah Zeigler was 17th with a time of 22:21.

EP 8th at Alleman: Erie-Prophetstown's 207 points earned the Panthers eighth place at the Class 1A Alleman Regional.

The host Pioneers scored 27 points to win with four of the top six runners including individual champion Maddie Kindelsperger.

Bureau Valley took 13th with 335 points. West Carroll was 14th with 345.

Dylan Chandler was Erie-Prophetstown's top runner, claiming 12th place with a time of 20:01.

West Carroll's top runner was Olivia Shelly in 50th place with a 23:19. Bureau Valley's top runner was Paige Wagner in 53rd place with a 23:49, narrowly beating teammate Jillian Hulsing.

SWIMMING & DIVING:

Byron wins home sectional: The Byron swimmers scored 215 points to out-distance Rockford Boylan in Saturday's Byron Sectional, claiming wins in four events.

Dixon's Laci Long scored 364.25 points to take first in diving.

Byron also got wins from Kate Schilling, who took first in the individual medley and the butterfly. Audrey Kilmer won the 200 freestyle. Oregon junior Avery Clark was fourth in the butterfly.

Morrison fifth at Rock Island: The Fillies scored 62 points to claim fifth at the Rock Island Sectional. Moline won the sectional title with 221. Sterling scored 12 points to claim 12th.

Schyon Drolema had Morrison's top finish of the day, taking fourth in the 50 freestyle.

Sterling's best finish was a seventh place in the butterfly by Jazmin Olivas.
