Drive-up, drive-thru Plano-Bologna-Sandwich Day set for Oct. 24

Image 1 of 4

The annual Plano-Bologna-Sandwich Day benefit will be a drive-up, drive-thru event because of the continuing pandemic, the organizing committee has announced.

This year's event is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to coincide with National Bologna Day. Everyone is invited to participate.

The event still will take place outdoors between Plano and Sandwich, but it will be what the committee is calling a “3D Event,” meaning it will be a drive-up, drop-off and drive-thru fundraiser.

According to the committee's plans, there will be no congregating or celebration on the lot at Tara Street and Burroughs Avenue as in the past. Instead, participants will drive up Chilton Way off Route 34 in front of Walmart in Plano and from Chilton Way to Burroughs Avenue. At that corner, they will drop off their food donation equal to $5 a person or cash donation of $5 a person and will get tickets equal to the number of their donations. Then they will drive to the corner of Tara Street and Burroughs Avenue to get the number of sandwiches equal to the tickets they have been given. They also will receive a bag of chips and a bottle of water as part of their meal.

This will be just a two-hour event. The only entertainment will be Rick Olson’s sound system from the “Bologna, Illinois” site at Tara Street and Burroughs Avenue. People driving through or waiting in line for their sandwiches are asked to not congregate on the site. Once a vehicle’s occupants have received their meals, they will exit from Burroughs Avenue onto Tara Street and then proceed to Route 34 to keep the line moving.

This will be a first-come, drive-thru fundraiser, and tickets will not be sold or given away ahead of time. The T-shirt theme for this year's event is "2020 Bites," but it will not be available on-site. Interested persons can order shirts from Off World Designs in Sandwich at offworlddesigns.com, with two versions available.

Instead of honorary co-mayors this time around, the PBS Day Committee has decided that all participants this year will be considered honorary co-mayors. The oath will be available to view before or on the day of the event on the special Facebook page for PBS Day. The PBS Day Committee thanks everyone for their support in helping them supply the local food pantries, especially during this trying pandemic period, and its members hope you can safely enjoy PBS Day 2020 and return to a normal event in 2021.
